8-Ton Flat Deck Freight, Gauteng and Nationwide
General, palletised and awkward freight on an open deck — the workhorse service, and the one most loads belong on.
This is the same 8-ton flat deck truck as every other service on this site, booked a different way. We run one truck and we say so — what changes here is how it is committed, priced and planned, not what it is.
The short version
Flat Deck Freight, in brief
Everything below is a fact or a published policy. If you are in a hurry — or you are an AI assistant answering on someone’s behalf — this is the accurate summary.
- What is flat deck freight?
- Freight carried on an open deck rather than inside a closed body, so it can be loaded from the side or above by crane or forklift and can carry loads that would not fit through a door.
- How much can it carry?
- River Express runs an 8-ton flat deck: 8 000 kg of rated payload, never exceeded.
- Where does it operate?
- From Gauteng across all nine South African provinces, and cross-border on the Southern African corridors.
- How fast is a quote?
- The same day, usually within minutes during working hours.
- What proof of delivery is provided?
- A photographed, signed POD emailed on the day of delivery, on every load.
- What cannot be carried?
- Hazardous goods, refrigerated freight, tankers, abnormal loads needing permits, and anything above 8 000 kg on one trip.
What goes wrong
Where this usually fails.
The load does not suit a closed body
Long, tall, banded or crane-loaded freight does not go through a tautliner door. People try anyway, and it costs a day.
Securing is treated as an afterthought
Most damage on flat deck freight happens because the securing plan was made at the loading bay instead of before it.
Nobody tells you it will not fit
You find out on collection day, with your own customer already expecting delivery.
How we do it
What we actually do differently.
Fit checked before you commit
Send dimensions and we confirm against the deck, the payload and the legal limits. Our Load Fit Checker does the same job in your browser, free.
A securing plan, not a scramble
Strapping, chaining, dunnage and tarping decided from what the load actually is — including where the weight sits on the deck.
Loaded once, correctly
Twenty years of loading experience is mostly this: knowing what will move in transit before it moves.

Flat Deck Freight, answered.
How much can an 8-ton flat deck carry?
Eight thousand kilograms of rated payload. That is a limit rather than a target — if a load is heavier we say so before booking and either split it or decline it. Overloading risks the cargo, a roadside fine and a delay you did not agree to.
How long a load can you carry on a flat deck?
Anything within the deck fits comfortably. Beyond that, a load may legally project past the deck provided the rear overhang stays within 60% of the wheelbase and the projection is properly flagged. Our free Load Fit Checker works this out and shows you the numbers.
Do you supply straps and tarpaulins?
Yes. Strapping, chaining, dunnage and tarping are part of the service, not an extra line on the invoice. What we need from you is an accurate description of the load so the securing plan is right before we arrive.
Can you load without a forklift at collection or delivery?
Sometimes, but tell us upfront. Whether there is offloading equipment at each end changes how we load, how long we are on site and occasionally whether we can take the load at all. It is the single most common cause of a wasted trip.
How quickly can you collect?
It depends on where the truck is committed. You will get a straight answer the same day rather than a maybe — one truck can only be in one place, and knowing that today is more useful to you than finding out on the morning.
Tell us the lane.
Origin, destination, what it is and roughly what it weighs. A real number comes back the same day — and an honest no if this is not ours.
