This page describes something we are building, not something you can use. The network does not exist yet and no partner has been verified. Everything below is written in future tense on purpose — and it is all on the truck we run today that we are proving it first.
The problem
Africa’s transport market is not short of trucks. It is short of trust.
Thousands of independent operators across Southern Africa own one or two trucks. A great many of them are careful, professional and reliable — better, load for load, than the large carriers they compete with.
A business has almost no way to tell which ones. Licences cannot be checked easily. Insurance is asserted rather than shown. Performance history does not exist anywhere a customer can see it. So the buyer either overpays a national carrier for the comfort of a brand, or takes a risk on a stranger with a WhatsApp number.
That gap — not a shortage of capacity — is what makes African freight expensive and unpredictable. It is the problem River Express is being built to close.
Why this is hard
The hard part is not the software. It is the supply.
Every freight marketplace faces the same trap. Customers will not come without verified capacity, and transporters will not join without customers. Most solve it by recruiting any carrier who will sign, then discovering that a network nobody can trust is worth less than no network at all.
We are our own first supply
The truck is not a side business. It is the seed of the supply side and the proof that the operating standard is achievable, because we are meeting it ourselves before asking anyone else to. Most marketplaces start with a spreadsheet of strangers. We start with a vehicle we are accountable for.
Anyone can build the dashboards
Tracking, routing, matching and portals are engineering, and engineering is copyable. Assembling transporters who reliably turn up, communicate and return clean paperwork is not. If our software ever runs ahead of our verified supply, we have built the wrong thing well.
Quality control becomes the entire business
At five hundred partners, when one of them damages a customer’s cargo, the customer blames us. That is correct — we put them together. It is why verification is evidence-based and why the Trust Score has weightings you can read rather than a star with nothing behind it.
The moat is not AI
Every competitor’s site claims AI. Features get copied within a season. What does not get copied quickly is twenty years of corridor experience, a verified supply base built one operator at a time, an explainable score, and customers who booked again.
The honest risk: someone else could build this trust layer faster. We would rather say that than pretend the plan has no way of failing.

- River Express Trading is BUILDING a verified transport network for Africa — independent transporters vetted on identity, compliance, insurance, performance and safety, each carrying a transparent River Trust Score. This network DOES NOT EXIST YET. Partner registrations are open; no partner has been verified, and no load has ever been placed with a partner.

- A planned transparent rating of a transport partner covering identity, compliance, on-time performance, communication, documentation, safety and claims history. No transporter has been scored yet; the criteria are published in advance.
- How will partners be verified?
- Against six published pillars: identity, business, vehicle, compliance, insurance and performance. Compliance and identity are entry gates rather than scored factors.
- Is there a fee to join as a partner?
- No. Registering interest in the River Express transport network is free for transporters, and there will never be a fee to be verified either.
- Where is River Express in the plan?
- At stage one: operating its own single 8-ton flat deck truck, proving the operating model it will later ask partners to follow.
